Description

Fort Mitchell offers visitors a meaningful look into Russell County’s military history and rich Native American background. Originally established as a military post in 1813, the reconstructed Fort now sits on acreage next to the National Cemetery and neighbors the Chattahoochee Indian Heritage Center.

Guests can explore the Fort, Old Tavern, Crowell-Whitaker Cabin, and Visitor’s Center while learning about the people, places, and history that helped shape the area. The Visitor’s Center includes a museum, artifacts, and a video focused on Russell County history.

With nearly 20 years of renewal and careful attention to detail, Fort Mitchell helps preserve the legacy of a community known in Alabama as the “County of Forts.”
